A little post i made on my website for beginning airsofters.
You bit the bullet (or rather the BB) and you started with airsoft. The postman has just delivered your first replica to your home. Exited you unpack it, take pictures of it and proudly post it on facebook and of course on Airsofter.world. A guarantee is that in addition to the cool, cool and beautiful reactions, you will immediately be confronted with the standard "you have to upgrade because" reactions. But what does that upgrade entail and is it really so necessary?
To start with the latter, No, you don't have to do anything at all and upgrading is not necessary for a beginner in my opinion. First play a few skirms with your stock replica. See what its pros and cons are and only then take a look at what you want to adjust and upgrade. Then when you've played a few skirms and you know your replica then you know what needs to be improved. The question, of course, is what can and should be improved. Do you want your replica to shoot more accurately, further and/or faster? It's upgrade time!
Upgrading yourself is not wise because as long as you do not know the technique well, there is a good chance that you will destroy your replica in such a way that buying a new one will be almost cheaper than having it repaired by an airsoft tech. Ask around, Facebook airsoft groups and people you met during skirms for a good airsoft technician who can perform the desired upgrades for you. And ignore people who keep insisting that you just have to do it yourself. Having upgrades done instead of doing it yourself is nothin to be ashamed of. I myself have been playing airsoft for a number of years and I don't do it myself, everyone has their trade I always say. You're not going to replace half the engine of your car if you don't know anything about it, are you?
And then the upgrades. The choice is huge I must say. Ranging from a simple hop-up rubber to completely replacing the internal parts. The options are so diverse that I cannot list them all here. Let yourself be well informed about the possibilities. A good tech will be able to tell you exactly what needs to be done to completely tailor your replica to your wishes. But expect a hefty price. Depending on your wishes, it can be a costly affair. Many upgrade parts are not exactly cheap.
Have you found a good tech? Be careful with him. He has performed the upgrades and therefore knows your replica through and through, something that can come in handy in the event of a repair (yes, replicas also sometimes break). If you get the chance to look over your tech's shoulder, do it. This way you get to know the internals of replica and with that you can carry out small repairs yourself in the future.
And maybe in the distant future you can upgrade your own replica.

Most of my rifles have been stock and I've been playing for a long time.
I did an upgrade on my ICS ARK and it did change for the better. But that came with a price tag. It's hard to say if the price is worth it. It was fun, that's for sure :D
